Orlando, FL – August 2005 – Sherman G. Miller, President of Multicom, Inc. recently accepted the President’s “E” Award presented by Philip Ouzts, Director of the Orlando U.S. Export Assistance Center, at the Citrus Club in Orlando.
Governor Jeb Bush, guest speaker for the presentation, spoke on the importance of export to the Florida economy. He said, “If you can build a field of dreams, build one where dreamers come…Florida’s future is bright because we have dreamers who have come here.” He also noted that Congress had passed the CAFTA – DR agreement, which the President signed into law on August 2, 2005. This free trade agreement reduces barriers to U.S. trade where more than 80% of U.S. goods will become duty-free in the Dominican Republic and Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua). The remaining tariffs will be phased out over 10 years. Governor Bush then spoke on the importance of the President’s “E” Award, noting, “Earning this award is an effort of a lifetime.”
Established in 1961 by presidential decree, the President’s “E” Award is the nation’s highest award presented to U.S. exporters. It is given in recognition of an organization’s achievement in supporting export growth in the U.S. business community. Multicom, Inc.’s export sales have comprised over 20 percent of its total sales and continues to grow. Multicom has grown from the modest ‘garage’ to facilities stocking over 6000 products from 85 different manufacturers and the reasons for its success; commitment and determination.
Sherman Miller states, “My advice for any company, large or small, is to make the export strategy a company commitment, but it takes more than a financial commitment; it’s your determination to succeed. The resources are available, such as the Department of Commerce and state and local economic development organizations; you just need to use them. As you grow, surround yourself with good people and support free trade.”
