HDMI is the first uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface designed to transmit state-of-the-art high-definition digital signals between digital sources such as set-top boxes, A/V receivers, DVD players, audio and/or video monitors, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. To accommodate future enhancements and requirements, HDMI transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio with bandwidth to spare.
HDMI can carry a variety of compressed audio formats such as Dolby or DTS. In addition, HDMI has the capacity to support existing high-definition video formats, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, NTSC and PAL.
